Jonathan Sumpter wrote his first novel, a tale about spies, when he was 11. Since then he has been laboring to write a second one that he'll be just as happy with.

Meet our readers: Renee Mariotti

          

Renee Mariotti is a Chicago native who has called New York City home for over 12 years. She makes her living as a wardrobe supervisor, costume designer, and stylist on various television shows, films, theatrical productions, and fashion events around the city. She spends her free time in the basement of bars performing improv comedy and stand-up.

Renee has been writing in various capacities for as long as she can remember. Her sketch comedy has been seen on stage at the Upright Citizens Brigade, the Magnet Theater, and the Peoples Improv Theater, and her stories have been shared on stage at the Magnet Theater.

While completing her graduate degree at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Renee took a diversion from her study of Criminal Law to take a Creative Nonfiction writing class, where she fell in love with the genre. A lifelong fan of storytelling and memoir, CNF proved to be the perfect marriage between the two, and she hasn't stopped writing within the form since!

Meet our readers: Rachel Voss

          

Rachel Voss is a high school English teacher who has lived in Astoria for the past decade. She graduated with a degree in Creative Writing and Literature from SUNY Purchase College. Her work has previously appeared in Hanging Loose Magazine, Newtown Literary, Unsplendid, The Ghazal Page, Bodega Magazine, and The New Verse News, among others, and is forthcoming in Jokes Review. She has read her work at venues throughout New York City and Long Island, and is a proud member of The Round Table, a women's arts collective dedicated to supporting and promoting female artists.

Meet our readers: Nancy Hightower

          

Nancy Hightower has published work in Entropy, Sundog Lit, Gargoyle, Flapperhouse, and Huffington Post, among other places. She is the author of The Acolyte, her first book of poetry, and Elementarí Rising. From 2014 to 2016 she was the science fiction and fantasy reviewer for The Washington Post. She is currently working on a book about digital fictions with DJ Spooky for Duke University Press, and a memoir about growing up in the evangelical South.

Jennifer Marie Brissett is the author of the novel Elysium, or, The World After. Her work has been shortlisted for the storySouth Million Writers Award, the Locus Award, the James Tiptree, Jr. Award, and has won the Philip K. Dick Award Special Citation. Her short stories can be found in FIYAH Magazine, Fantastic Stories of the Imagination, Lightspeed, Terraform, Uncanny, The Future Fire, APB: Artists Against Police Brutality, and other publications. And once in her life, a long time ago and for three and a half years, she owned and operated a Brooklyn indie bookstore called Indigo Café & Books. She is currently on faculty at the Gotham Writers Workshop where she teaches Science Fiction & Fantasy Writing. She lives in NYC. Her website can be found at www.jennbrissett.com.

A gigantic thanks to everyone who turned out for our sixteenth regular episode of Line Break this past Saturday, at beautiful Q.E.D. in Astoria, Queens. Just by showing up and giving us the gift of your attention, you helped make the afternoon bigger and better than it would have been without you.

Thanks as always to Q.E.D. for giving us the space and an opportunity to use it. And thanks especially to our amazing readers, who made it the fantastic show it turned out to be. Host William Shunn took us to a remote space station to accompany a young Luddite on his first day of work. Oscar Sanders shared fierce excerpts from his one-man show, Exposing Politics. Chandler Klang Smith brought us an intriguing wedding scene from her new novel The Sky Is Yours. Richard Jeffrey Newman serenaded us with provocative poetry from his book Words for What Those Men Have Done. And David Mack whisked us to the magical battlefields of WWII with an excerpt from his new novel The Midnight Front.

William Shunn hosts and produces the Line Break Reading Series. His latest short story, "Last," recently appeared in the online science fiction anthology Seat 14C, presented by XPRIZE (where he serves on the Science Fiction Advisory Council). He is the author of the religious true-crime memoir The Accidental Terrorist, and his poetry is forthcoming in both Analog and Asimov's. When not hosting shows or writing about the future, Bill enjoys sneaking onto other people's television specials.
